Exploration - Eastfield

Saturday, October 15, 2011

10:00 am start

A leisurely day of looking will be the rule of the day. Eastfield Village is the creation and life work of Don Carpentier, who has been collecting and reconstructing the stuff of everyday life between 1787 and 1840 since 1958.

The village is called Eastfield because Don's father give him eight acres of woodlot near the east field of the family farm in 1971 for the first of his reconstructions: a blacksmith's shop (somebody's pigpen before Don dismantled and hauled it here). There are now more that 20 buildings, including the whale of a tavern where our HVVA meeting will take place.

PETER SINCLAIR: DRAWING ON THE PAST

Exhibit of line drawings featuring local vernacular architecture by the founder of Hudson Valley Vernacular Architecture

Four Saturdays, November 21 and 28, December 5 and 12, 2009

A special exhibit of recent art works by Peter Sinclair, founder of the organization Hudson Valley Vernacular Architecture (HVVA), will open in the Friends of Historic Kingston Museum Gallery on Saturday, November 21.

Peter Sinclair: Drawing on the Past can be viewed thru December 12 on Saturdays, 1-4 p.m. Free and open to the public.
Friends of Historic Kingston Museum Gallery, corner Wall-Main Streets, Kingston's Stockade District. (845) 339-0720.
An artist's reception will be held as part of Kingston's First Saturday Art Events on December 5 at 7 p.m.

Following a stroke in 2006, Sinclair turned to creating line drawings as part of the rehabilitation process and literally drew his way back into the world he loves by making local vernacular architecture the predominant theme. A preservation activist, Sinclair hopes the art works will benefit the local preservation community with proceeds from sales being donated to HVVA and the Friends of Historic Kingston.

Founded in the mid-1990s, HVVA has been offering tours of old houses and barns, helps historic groups with programs, and teaches forgotten arts and trades such as thatching, how to build a hay barrack or move a barn. Sinclair's work, in particular, has contributed significantly to the history of the Hudson Valley region by his research and publicizing of information on early structures that is not being done by any other organization or individual.
